John ‘Griff’ D. Griffis, operated restaurants

John “Griff” D. Griffis of Dagsboro passed away May 5, 2020, at home. He was born in Washington, D.C., Nov. 27, 1948, a surviving twin of James Griffis and Helen Griffis. John was brother to Jim Griffis, Barbara Williams, Jerome Griffis (deceased) and Thomas Griffis (twin-deceased).

He proudly served his country during the Vietnam War. After leaving the military he successfully operated restaurants in Maryland, and owned and operated Griff’s Landing in Frederick, Md.  He was a member of American Legion Post 24, VFW, and the Moose Lodge. John enjoyed fishing, the Baltimore Orioles and gardening. 

John is survived by his children, Shawn Griffis, Shannon Essel and Aislinn Fones; and his grandchildren Reghan, Lohgan, Gavin, Griffen, Kensley, Tanner and Daxton; nephews Thomas, Chad, Geoff, Michael and Matthew; nieces Dawn, Cathlin and Michelle. 

A celebration of John’s Life will be held at Melson Funeral Services, 43 Thatcher St., Frankford, Monday, Aug. 31, at noon  with visitation at 11 a.m.  Interment with military honors will follow at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Millsboro.
