John M. Fox Sr., Verizon retiree
John M. Fox Sr., 92, of Rehoboth Beach, and formerly of Stanton, passed away at Delaware Veterans Home Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2022, after an extended illness.
Born April 16, 1930, in New Castle, he was a son of the late Wilbur Wilson Fox Sr. and Jean (Miller) Fox. John proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He retired after 38 years of service from Verizon, formerly Bell Atlantic.
His greatest joy was taking care of those he loved. In his retirement, he enjoyed spending his winters in Florida. He made many memories with friends and family playing cards, chess, and crossword puzzles, along with listening to music and playing his piano to pass time. He was an avid Jeopardy fan and quite knowledgeable. John was a lifelong University of Delaware football and basketball fan. He was very fond of antique cars and a proud owner of a 1929 Buick that he liked to ride around in. John especially treasured traveling with the love of his life, Allene.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Allene (Anspach) Fox, in addition to his parents. He is survived by his children, Elizabeth “Beth” Bevans (Rex) of Florida, John “Buddy” (Karen) of Odessa, Allen of Georgetown, and Barbara Walters (David G.) of Rehoboth Beach; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 31, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 North DuPont Pkwy., New Castle, where a funeral service will begin at 1 p.m. Interment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 North DuPont Hwy., New Castle.
