Joyce H. Phillips, had heart for missions
Joyce H. Phillips, 84, of Millsboro, formerly of Malden, Mass., passed away Thursday, May 21, 2015 at Brandywine Assisted Living in Rehoboth Beach.
Joyce was born in Salem, N.J., April 28, 1931, and raised in Wilmington, daughter of the late Charles and Violet (Caudle) Phillips. She was a graduate of Conrad High School and received her bachelor's and master's degrees from Northeastern University in Boston, Mass.
Joyce was an educator, retiring after 31 years of service from the state of Massachusetts. Joyce also had a heart for missions, where she served in the Philippines and other Southeastern Asian countries. She also opened her home to many Laotians as they transitioned from Laos to make a new life for themselves in the United States.
In addition, to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Dorothy J. Peterson, April 12, 2015. She is survived by two nieces, Lauren Long of Mount Holly, N.C. and Betty Hostler of Wilmington; a nephew, Steve Peterson of Dagsboro; and a brother-in-law, Robert ''Bob'' Peterson of Millsboro.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, May 27, at Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. Dupont Hwy., New Castle.
