At the Lett’s Play Golf charity golf tournament held July 19 at Kings Creek Country Club, the Stephen R. Lett Scholarship Fund Inc. announced that Jacob Martin of Ocean View, a graduate of Indian River High School, is the 2013 recipient of a $10,000 college scholarship award. Jacob will receive $2,500 per year for four years. He will be attending the University of Delaware.
The tournament is the major fundraising event for the five-year-old scholarship fund. With a best ball format of 2, 1, 1, the winners were Walter Jones, Bill Manning, Hayden Evans and Bernie Genevish with a net team score of 63 on the par 71 Kings Creek Country Club layout.
Kings Creek head golf professional Kevin Wiest said, “Over 116 players competed vigorously in this fun best-ball format. While the record heat was daunting, their commitment to this important event was impressive, and the level of golf play was very high. The tournament was sold out this year, and we raised over $30,000 in scholarship funds”.
This is the fourth year the fund has awarded a $2,500 scholarship to a high school senior who demonstrates qualities of leadership, academic discipline and community awareness. The selection is made by an independent panel, and the scholarship is applied to the college or university of the recipient’s choice. In addition, the program is unique in that each recipient is entitled to receive this financial aid each year of his or her four college years.
Prior Lett Scholarship Fund winners include Patricia Conlon of Lewes in 2010, attending High Point University in High Point, N.C. and receiving her fourth stipend; Tyson Mayers Jr. of Rehoboth Beach in 2011, attending Clemson University in Clemson, S.C., and receiving his third stipend; and last year’s winner Ethan Robinson of Wilmington, also attending Clemson and receiving his second stipend.
Scholarship fund President Stephen R. Lett, a former president of Kings Creek Country Club, said, “With the high cost of a college education today, we are pleased that our tournament attracts so many players and sponsors who want to make a difference in a young person’s life. It’s a great tournament for a really good cause.”
Any high school senior is eligible to be considered for this award if nominated by either a member or an employee of Kings Creek Country Club. The nominee does not have to be affiliated with the club and can live in another state. An independent selection committee consisting of two fund board members and three outside community and education leaders reviews all nominations and selects one recipient each year.
