La Vida Hospitality initiative to distribute bikes for local kids

December 7, 2022

Creating connections and lending a helping hand are the cornerstone of La Vida Hospitality and its Be Involved initiative.

Four years ago, Be Involved Director Kathy McDonald and catering chef Steve Carey began collecting funds to donate bikes to children in the local community during the holiday season. It was a small and personally meaningful effort that has grown over the years.

Starting with 10 bikes and growing to 40 in 2021, the effort is on track to distribute more than 50 bikes and 10 skateboards to children in Sussex County this year. The group has coordinated with local organizations such as the Community Resource Center, Santa’s Letters, West Side New Beginnings, Boys and Girls Clubs in Rehoboth and Oak Orchard, Children’s Beach House and Cape Community Cares.

Team members from La Vida Hospitality’s businesses plan to start assembling the bikes Friday, Dec. 9. “This has been a great way for our team here at La Vida to come together and spread some holiday cheer in our local community,” said Becca Anderson, Big Chill director of operations.

Bike dropoffs will begin Tuesday, Dec. 13, to ensure they are wrapped, beribboned and delivered in time for the holiday. McDonald, who is known for saying “It feels good to give,” said she is thrilled with the community support that allows the organization to help kids have a memorable holiday.

La Vida Hospitality’s Be Involved is committed to promoting wellness and improve lives for its community and hospitality workers, through education, financial support and connections to wellness experts.
