Lacrosse teams go to work on the quest to be the best

March 4, 2022

Winning is a tradition for Cape’s lacrosse teams, with 18 combined state championships for the boys’ and girls’ programs. The mission is the same for both programs: “Get to the final four, then try to win the state tournament.”

The girls start the season with a timed mile run to test overall fitness level.

“The field players are expected to break 7:30,” said coach Lindsey Underwood. “These are the fastest mile times we’ve had in my seven years here. We had seven girls run under 6:30.”

Overall numbers for girls’ lacrosse are down despite 12 straight state championships, while girls’ soccer numbers have swelled, forcing coach Patrick Kilby to cut 17 athletes, still leaving him with 44 for varsity and junior varsity.

The boys’ lacrosse team practiced on three different fields the first three days: Legends Stadium, Champions Stadium and the back pasture grass field.

“We’ve got work to do and lost a lot of good players from last year’s team, but I’m looking forward to this season,” said coach Mark D’Ambrogi.

The boys open the season Monday, March 21, hosting Salesianum, while the girls travel to Stephen Decatur Tuesday, March 22, to begin their season.
