Larry Lambert Burton, retired physicist
Larry Lambert Burton, 74, of Woodley Park, Washington, D.C., passed away Thursday, March 23, 2023, at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, Md., after an extended recovery from a kidney transplant. He was born June 8, 1948, in Bluefield, Va., son of the late William Eskar and Dolores Deferras Lambert.
Larry graduated from Washington Irving High School, received a bachelor of science degree and a master of science degree in physics from Michigan State University, and a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Maryland. He was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Eta Sigma, and Phi Kappa Phi academic honor societies.
His career revolved around designing computer models and research development in oceanic acoustic sound propagation for civilian and military uses. Larry was soft-spoken in his manner and always precise in his speech.
Larry grew up an avid sports car enthusiast and acquired an extensive collection of them throughout his life which was his great source of pride. He was a worldwide skier, a burgeoning art aficionado, a wine collector, a food critic, an avid reader of adventure, spy novels, and science fiction, and a connoisseur of fine culture.
He is remembered by his neighbors of 35 years, Mary, Patrick, Cormac and Ciaran O’Donovan, and friends with whom he worked and vacationed.
His parents preceded him in death, and he will be buried with them.
A graveside service will be held at noon, Friday, March 31, at Bridgeport Cemetery in Bridgeport, W.Va., with a pastor officiating.
