Legacy Academy announces speech meet winners
Legacy Academy students from grades 1-8 recently competed in the school’s second annual speech meet.
Students were challenged to memorize and recite age-appropriate selections of poetry, scripture, narrative essay and more.
“Legacy’s speech meet is a hallmark of our model of classical education. Speech meet gives our students, even from an early age, the opportunity to hone the skill of rhetoric, or persuasion. Our students prepared and delivered a feast for the mind and soul,” said Karen Barbrow, Legacy head of school. “Months of diligent study allowed students to hide words of truth, beauty and goodness in their hearts and then share the wisdom gleaned with their audience.”
Legacy Academy’s 2024 first-place winner is Anna Louden, grade 6, who recited the poem “Paul Revere’s Ride” by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Second-place winner Jack Louden, grade 8, told selected stories from “Beowulf” translated by Seamus Heaney. Lane Barbrow, grade 3, won the third-place prize for his recitation of the poem “Jabberwocky” by Lewis Carroll.
For the second year, Delaware State Rep. Jeff Hilovsky, R-Long Neck, and Indya Rennie of the Delaware Family Policy Council served as Legacy’s competition judges.
“Legacy was honored to have our judges return for Speech Meet this year and see the evident growth in our returning students. They could also witness the new talent of our students joining us this year. We are grateful for their support of our mission and event,” said Barbr
