Lewes 8-10 All-Stars fall in state tournament

MOT advances to Eastern Regional in Rhode Island

JULY 29 UPDATE: The Lewes 8-10 baseball all-stars were eliminated from the state tournament following a 6-1 loss to Middletown, Odessa, Townsend July 29 at the Camden-Wyoming Little League complex. MOT advances to the Eastern Regional in Cranston, R.I., which is slated to begin Friday, Aug. 4. 

JULY 28 UPDATE: The Lewes 8-10 baseball all-stars advanced to the championship round of the state tournament July 28, with a 19-4 win over Brandywine at the Camden-Wyoming Little League complex. Lewes will play Middletown, Odessa, Townsend at 7 p.m., Saturday, July 29. The team needs to beat MOT twice to claim the title. MOT advanced to the championship round with an 18-8 win over Brandywine. 

In Lewes’ win July 28, Ben Pease pitched a great game, allowing just three hits over four innings. He struck out three batters. Lucca Fazio had four RBIs and a bomb of an over the fence. Eight hitters for combined for 10 hits total.

“I would like to dedicate this win to Terry Megee who passed away on Thursday,” said Lewes manager Blake Hershelman. “He was pillar of the Georgetown community and coached many of my teams growing up. He was a great role model who spent countless hours doing good for others. He would’ve been very proud of our boys tonight.”

 

ORIGINAL POST: The Lewes 8-10 All-Stars fell to Brandywine 13-9 in the opening round of the state tournament July 26 at the Camden-Wyoming Little League complex.

The Lewes squad opened the game with hot bats, scoring five runs in the first inning, but it couldn’t hold the lead. Brandywine chipped away, scoring three in each of the second, third and fourth innings, and four runs in the sixth.

Each squad had 10 hits in the game.

Lewes players Chase Sanchez and Aiden Jester delivered at the dish with two RBIs apiece. Catcher Brody Fazio went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Lucca Fazio and Lucas Skonieczki each knocked in a run. Grant Hershelman and Ben Pease had a hit each, while Mason Thompson went 2-for-4.

Lucca Fazio started on the mound, striking out four Brandywine batters. Sanchez, Mike Dimuzio and Jester made pitching appearances from the bullpen.

The Lewes squad awaits the loser of the July 27 game between Middletown-Odessa-Townsend and Brandywine. Lewes’ next game will be Friday, July 28. They need to win out to claim the state championship. 

“I think we played hard, but not well enough to win a state tournament game,” said Lewes manager Blake Hershelman. “We have a tough group of boys, so we’ll see how they bounce back Friday.”

Softball regional

The Georgetown Major League All-Stars softball team won the District 3 title, then the state tournament to reach the Mid-Atlantic Regional in Bristol, Conn. Georgetown opened the regional tournament with a 5-2 loss to New York July 24. The team bounced back with a dominating 18-0 win over Washington, D.C., July 25. But the tournament run came to an end July 26 with a 2-1 loss to Pennsylvania. The Maryland team was represented by Delmar. Delmar was eliminated after losing its first two games.
