Lewes BPW says farewell to general manager

Austin Calaman will stay on as consultant during transition
December 23, 2024

The Lewes Board of Public Works said farewell to Austin Calaman, who has been general manager for the last three-and-a-half years.

“He has far surpassed anything I could have imagined at the time,” said Tom Panetta, BPW board president, at the organization’s Dec. 12 meeting.

The board unanimously approved a contract to keep Calaman on as a consultant for 12 months, during the transition to a new general manager.

He will be paid a retainer of $800 per month for eight hours of consulting work.

Panetta said the same arrangement was made with Darrin Gordon, BPW’s previous general manager, during the transition to Calaman.

Lewes Mayor and City Council also publicly thanked Calaman for his service at their Dec. 9 meeting.

“[Austin leaving] will be a loss to the city and particularly the BPW,” said Mayor Andrew Williams, in presenting Calaman with a parting gift.

Calaman resigned in November to take a similar job in Pennsylvania.

He has led BPW through recent major projects, like connecting the Donovan-Smith Manufactured Home Park to city sewer and water, and the Aug. 20 city water outage.
