The Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company was organized in 1906, but its early efforts to establish firefighting capability proved inadequate to meet the town’s needs. During the period between 1906 and 1920, major fires destroyed large swaths of buildings. Only after a citywide water system was installed in 1916, the town’s first motorized fire truck was purchased in 1923 and RBVFC was reorganized, were there sufficient resources to adequately control fires in Rehoboth. There have been notable and sometimes significant fires since, but the RBVFC has been up to the task.
A lecture covering the history and development of the RBVFC will start promptly at 7:15 p.m., Thursday, March 9, in the Sussex Room at the Boardwalk Plaza Hotel. A donation of $25 per person is requested. All proceeds in excess of expenses will go toward sustaining the 1910 Railroad Era Rehoboth diorama project; see details at goldenageofrehoboth.com. Contact Paul Lovett at paul@pdlovett.com or call 302-893-9391 to reserve a seat. A separate presentation will be made at the firehouse for RBVFC members and spouses.
