Maurki James to play football at Old Dominion

Maurki James, with teammates gathered behind him in the Cape rotunda Dec. 20, signed to play football at the Division I Old Dominion University.

ODU is a member of Sun Belt Conference’s East Division that includes James Madison, Appalachian State, Coastal Carolina, Georgia State, Marshall and Georgia Southern. The Sun Belt’s Western Division includes Troy, Texas State, South Alabama, Arkansas State, Louisiana, Southern Mississippi and UL-Monroe. 

James was one of 18 high school seniors to sign with the Monarchs Dec. 20. As a senior player, James had 278 carries for 1,821 yards and 23 touchdowns. He totaled 3,398 yards and 42 touchdowns in his career. He also caught 26 passes for 358 yards and four scores. In 2023, he helped lead Cape to a berth in the state championship game, rushing for 191 yards and five touchdowns in Cape’s semifinal win over Sussex Central.
