Maxine Cora Baker, family cheerleader

September 18, 2018

Maxine Cora Baker of Millsboro, 72, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Thursday, Sept. 13, 2018, when she passed away suddenly from complications of a stroke. Maxine was born in Milford June 7, 1946, to the late Harry and Cora Marker.

She worked for the Indian River School District for 13 years at Howard T. Ennis in a job she loved, helping students succeed  in life. But her passion in life was her family. She was the family cheerleader, rock and voice of encouragement. Maxine cherished her family above all else, and loved nothing more than spending time together. She started traditions years ago that her great-grandchildren cherish and look forward to today, and those traditions will be kept alive in her honor.

In addition to her parents, she is also preceded in death by a son, Vernon Baker Jr.; and a sister, Shirley Oliphant.

Maxine is survived by her devoted husband of 58 years, Vernon Alvin Baker of Millsboro; her children, Donna Collins (Alvin) of Georgetown, Dean Baker (Sylvia) of Georgetown, Jay Baker (Loretta) of Milton, Kay Baker (Tara) of Milton, and Bruce Wright  (Dawn) of Gumboro.  She also leaves behind her sister Gail Adkins (Joe) of Millsboro; and brothers, Harry Marker (Betty) of Georgetown, Ronald Marker of Georgetown and Jeff Marker (Wendy) of Millsboro;  as well as 12 grandchildren;  and seven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by many nieces, and nephews whom she loved with all her heart.

A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 22, at Watson Funeral Home, 211 S. Washington St., Millsboro, where friends may call from 5 to 6 p.m. for visitation. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations in Maxine’s memory to Howard T. Ennis School, 20346 Ennis St., Georgetown, DE  19947.

Letters of condolence may be emailed via www.watsonfh.com.
