A Delaware Department of Transportation project is underway this week to add more improvements to the Route 1-Cave Neck Road intersection. New customized signs and flashers are being installed and the concrete island on the southbound lanes of Route 1 at the northwestern corner of the intersection is being removed.
Two intersection improvement projects have taken place over the past five years. In 2019, the traffic flow at the intersection was changed to block left turns off Cave Neck Road into northbound Route 1. Then in 2021, more improvements were added, including 19 overhead lights to improve visibility and extended turn lanes from Route 1 onto Cave Neck Road and at the crossover south of the intersection in front of Red Mill Inn.
A grade-separated interchange is planned at the intersection, with construction expected to begin in 2025.
