Rehoboth planning meeting canceled

The Rehoboth Beach Planning Commission meeting scheduled for Friday, Oct. 11, has been canceled. The city announced the cancelation Oct. 9.

The meeting was canceled due to the planning commission not having all the supporting documentation necessary to consider the applications at hand, said a press release from the city. Also, it continued, the planning commission does not currently have an attorney to represent it.

The agenda called for a continuation of the site-plan review for One Rehoboth Avenue Hotel and a concept review for a project at 8 Wilmington Ave.

Foundation Baptist pastor to carry cross on Rt. 113

Foundation Baptist Church Pastor Garrett Hale, along with his congregation, will carry an eight-foot cross on Route 113, from Selbyville to Milford on Saturday, Oct. 12. The purpose of the journey is to remind Sussex Countians to look to Jesus. Those interested can track the congregation’s progress on social media at #foundationbaptistchurchde. 

Foundation Baptist Church is a new church offering services every Sunday, starting Nov. 3, at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. at Hudson Waterfront, 25113 Enge Lane, Millsboro.

Lewes CHEER center sets yard sale and breakfast Oct. 12

Harbour Lights CHEER Center in Lewes is hosting a yard sale from 7 a.m. to noon, and a breakfast from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Oct., 12 at 34211 Woods Edge Drive, off Kings Highway, Lewes. The public is invited. Depending on choices of meat, meals will cost either $5 or $6. Members of the public may pay $10 to reserve a table to sell items. To sign up, call 302-327-9491.

Oktoberfest party set at Starboard Oct. 12

Starboard is hosting an Oktoberfest celebration with German beers and Bavarian pretzels from 1 to 5 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 12, in Dewey Beach.  The event’s beer tasting will raise funds for the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition. 

Live band Polkadelphia will entertain attendees with its energetic bent that blends classic polka with contemporary sounds.  Participants are encouraged to come dressed to impress in the traditional 19th century garb of the Alpine regions of Austria and Bavaria, the dirndl for women and the lederhosen for men.

UUSD to meet Oct. 13

The Unitarian Universalists of Southern Delaware will hold a service at 10 a.m., Sunday, Oct. 13. The Rev. John Wright will present “The Good - Bad Old Days.” Wright said, “As the saying goes, ‘Nostalgia just ain't what it used to be. He will examine the rose-colored glasses through which people so often view the past.

Following this service, there will be an all-congregational presentation of the February 2024 Committee on Congregational Life survey results. For more information, go to uussd.org.

Lewes council to meet Oct. 14

Lewes Mayor and City Council will meet at 5:30 p.m., Monday, Oct. 14, at city hall.

The agenda includes discussion and possible action on a proposed ordinance to amend driveway width rules on residential city alleys and alley-like roads.

Lewes planners to hold public hearing 

The Lewes Planning Commission will hold a public hearing regarding the Warrington property at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 15, at the Rollins Center.

Sussex County Council to meet Oct. 15

Sussex County Council will meet at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 15, at the County Administration Building in Georgetown. The group will consider an ordinance to amend code related to public hearings for preliminary plat approval or disapproval. 

Members will also consider an ordinance to amend code related to open space and preliminary site plan requirements. 

At 1:30 p.m., council will hold a series of public hearings. 

Among those is an application from Justice Boyz LLC for a conditional use in the AR-1, agricultural residential, zoning district for the allowance of maintenance/repair of company equipment and vehicles and the inclusion of fuel tanks on a parcel at 32605 Millsboro Highway, Lewes.

Dogfish dining to benefit Overfalls Oct. 16

Dogfish Head Brewings & Eats will host a Beer & Benevolence Night to support the Overfalls Foundation from 4 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 16, at 320 Rehoboth Ave., Rehoboth Beach. To assist the foundation in its mission, 10% of the evening’s proceeds will be donated to the nonprofit.

The Overfalls Foundation is a nonprofit organization that preserves, teaches about and honors the lightships of the United States and their sailors, and the maritime history of communities in Coastal Delaware through the preservation and display of the Lightship Overfalls and its collection of associated maritime artifacts. Special Rehoboth BoA hearing Oct. 16

The Rehoboth Beach Board of Adjustment has scheduled a special meeting for 2 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 16, to continue a hearing related to the Belhaven Hotel. 

Specifically, the hearing is related to a variance request that would allow the project to apply offsite parking at a Baltimore Avenue parking lot that the developer owns to be used toward the hotel’s required parking. The meeting will be conducted in the commissioners room of city hall, 229 Rehoboth Ave.

Tips to improve doctor visit is Oct. 16 topic

Tips on how to improve doctor visits will be the focus of a free presentation set from 2 to 4 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 16, at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Lewes. A leader in medical education, presenter Dr. Mary Harris has taught residents how to focus and listen to a patient’s issues. She has also given patients effective tools to get the most out of their doctor’s visits. Her presentation will include examples of scenarios to illustrate ways people can prepare to make the most of their valuable time spent with medical professionals. Along with time for questions and answers, there will be handouts provided to reinforce key points presented.

Department of Elections early voting sites to open Oct. 25

The Delaware Department of Elections recently announced the 2024 general election early voting sites and schedule.

Delaware registered voters may vote in person at any early voting site in their county of residence during the 10-day early voting period prior to Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 5. Early voting for the general election will begin Friday, Oct. 25.

Early voting sites in each county will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 24 through Tuesday, Oct. 29; and from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 30 through Sunday, Nov. 3. To see a complete list of locations, go to de.gov/votinglocations.

Five Points Working Group to meet Oct. 28

The Five Points Working Group will meet at 6 p.m., Monday, Oct. 28, at Cape Henlopen High School in Lewes. The meeting is also viewable via Zoom. The topic will be Route 1 congestion management and traffic operations.  

The group will also receive updates on ongoing construction projects in the area and discuss the Route 1 low-stress bikeway study.

Grotto Pizza specials support local nonprofits

Since October is National Pizza Month and Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Grotto Pizza is donating $2 each from the sale of every Mama Grotto specialty homestyle pizza to the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition. 

“The coalition does critical work in our state by raising awareness about breast health, educating patients about access to care and supporting services that focus on early detection,” said Jeff Gosnear, president of the Rehoboth Beach-based restaurant group.

And continuing through Tuesday, Dec. 31, Grotto will donate $1 from the sale of every Tito’s Handmade Vodka cranberry punch to Meals on Wheels Delaware.
