Roadway fatalities on the rise in October
Midway through October, there have already been 10 fatalities on Delaware roads, bringing the total for the year to 109, and exceeding the seven fatalities that occurred in October 2023.
Fatality numbers for the year in total are still below the 113 at the same point last year, but pedestrian and motorcyclist fatalities are both drastically up this year.
"Delaware has averaged 38 fatal crashes over the last three months of the calendar year since 2021," said Delaware Department of Transportation Secretary Nicole Majeski. "As we move further into fall, we remind everyone to put safety first, especially pedestrians and motorcyclists as it gets darker earlier."
DelDOT launched the Be DelAWARE safety campaign in April to increase awareness of the growing number of crashes and fatalities occurring on Delaware roads and encourage safe travel on all modes of transportation.
A safety pledge has also been developed for residents of all ages to show their support for the initiative and commit to doing their part to make the roads safe for all. To learn more and to take the safety pledge, go to BeDelAWARE.deldot.gov.
