September 11, 2023

A 37-year-old Ocean City, Md., man faces charges after police say he was disorderly at The Starboard Sept. 9 and pulled a razor blade on a trooper who tried to remove him from the premises.

Police were called at 10:02 p.m. to the popular Dewey Beach bar in connection with a disturbance, police said.

When they arrived, police tried to help The Starboard employees remove Matthew Slentz, police said, but Slentz refused. He then took out a razor blade from his hooded shirt and lunged at a trooper, police said.

Slentz continued to refuse verbal commands to comply, police said, and they took him into custody after he was Tasered.

Police said they found a razor blade and a concealed spring-loaded switchblade knife after searching Slentz. Neither the trooper nor The Starboard patrons were injured during the incident, police said.

Slentz was taken to Troop 7 and charged with possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony, felony aggravated menacing, two count of carrying a concealed deadly weapon and disorderly conduct. He was arraigned at Justice of the Peace Court 3 and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution in default of $22,050 secured bond.
