Oceans Waves Quilt Guild to host community service sew-in

July 29, 2021

The Ocean Waves Quilt Guild will hold its annual community service sew-in from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday, Aug. 2, at Conley’s Methodist Church off Camp Arrowhead Road, Lewes.

The quilt guild’ 250 members are dedicated to community service.

Members donate materials, time and talents to many community service projects.

Established in Lewes in 1997, the guild provides one-of-a kind, handmade contributions to residents in need in the Delmarva area working with local charitable and medical organizations.

Guild volunteers will participate in several sponsored projects Aug. 2. They will cut and sew infant burial gowns from used bridal dresses; the gowns will be distributed to maternity and pediatric departments of hospitals throughout the state. Fabric will be cut for pillowcases which are given to patients undergoing infusion treatments and heart pillows will be sewn and stuffed for patients receiving treatment for breast cancer. Members will cut fabric, sew and stuff bears for use by emergency personnel responding to homes with young children. Members also will make baby quilts to give to local hospitals and patriotic quilts for the Quilts of Valor program for service members and veterans.

While this event will be the guild’s first in-person meeting since last spring due to COVID restrictions, community service projects have continued throughout the pandemic. Members have worked in their own home sewing spaces to make sure the guild’s important community services projects continued uninterrupted.
