With churches closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, residents in central Sussex County can still celebrate the Easter season with a throwback to the days of drive-in movies.

The Georgetown Historical Society's Nutter Marvel Carriage Museum will host outdoor services on its spacious grounds for at least the next two weeks.

Churchgoers can sit in their vehicles and listen to the services on FM station 96.9.

On Palm Sunday, April 5, the Rev. Bruce Rogers of Long Neck United Methodist Church will lead the service from a stage. Sen. Brian Pettyjohn, R-Georgetown, who first proposed the idea, will welcome people to the service.

The service will get underway with music from 8:30 to 8:55 a.m., followed by prayers, hymns and Rogers' message.

Georgetown Mayor Bill West received approval for the services from Gov. John Carney's office. Social distancing restrictions must be observed and people must stay in their vehicles with the windows rolled up. People will be directed to park at least 6 feet apart in the field adjacent to the museum complex.

The Rev. Harold Carmean of Cokesbury Church in Georgetown will lead the Easter Sunday, April 12 service.

The museum is located at 510 S. Bedford Street, Georgetown.
