The 13th annual New Year’s Day Hair of the Dog 5K in Bethany Beach ironically starts on a parkway (Garfield) named after a cat.
The race also begins with a Kiddle K. Kids are clueless as to hair of the dog remedies; they just sprint to get a medal. Some run the full 5K, while others tag along with relatives and family dogs for the mile walk.
The morning is topped off by the Leo Brady Plunge in the ocean at noon.
At total of 315 runners – 151 men and 164 women – competed in and completed the 5K.
Aaron MacGray, 39, of LeVale Md., was the overall winner in 17:54. The top 11 runners were all males running under 20:39.
Michael Sipics, 47, of Macungie, Pa., was the male masters winner in 19:34. Mike Sewell, 54, of Lewes was grandmasters male champion in 20:07.
Steven Eshelman, 30, of Lincoln placed seventh in 19:47 and was the top finisher from Delaware.
Theresa Gagliardi, 40, of Glenolden, Pa., was 12th overall and first female, with a time of 20:56. Lisa Chilcote, 53, of Rockville, Mass., was female masters winner in 22:25. Teri Walsh, 56, of Lutherville, Md., won the female grandmasters title in 22:49.
Senior grandmasters winners, both finishing in 23:59, were Lee Stumpf, 62, of Sykesville, Md., and Debbie Blair, 62, of Lewes.
The top four states represented in the race were Maryland, Pennsylvania, Delaware and New Jersey.
The oldest person to complete the race was wonder woman Linda Carter, 81, who circled the course in 49:53.
Mason Sackett, 9, was the fastest lad under 9 in 23:47. Brooke Golba, 14, from Salisbury, Md., won the 10-14 age group in 21:43. Lincoln Narvaez, 14, (no hometown listed) won the male 10-14 division in 18:22.
Zuleyka Matinez, 34, of Wilmington was 14th overall and second female in 21:16.
The 60-69 female age group had 40 competitors, with the top spot going to Ginnie Todd, 66, of Frankford in 26:19, followed by Rhonda Magel, 68, of Fargo, N.D., in 26:40. Debbie Kuster, 74, of Millville won the 70-79 female age group in 37:34.
Riley Moran, 25, of Rehoboth Beach won the male 20-29 age group in 21:57. Patrick Smith, 38, of Forest Hill, Md., was second overall and first in the 30-39 male age group in 18:08.
Jim Falvey, 60, of Millersville, Md., won the male 60-69 age group in 24:19. Mike Smith, 64, a sportswriter for the Coastal Point in Ocean View, was second in 24:48.
