There will be intermittent lane closures and short-term closures of Route 9 and Park Avenue near Georgetown from 9 a.m., Saturday, April 29, until noon, Sunday, April 30. This is for advanced utility work needed for Phase 2 of the Park Avenue relocation project. Motorists are advised to use caution and expect delays while in the area.
The project will provide intersection improvements, and widen Park Avenue with 12-foot travel lanes and 10-foot shoulders. It will also upgrade Truck Route 9 by removing it from some sections of Park Avenue and South Bedford Street. Once Park Avenue is realigned, and the western section is abandoned, it will allow for the proposed runway extension at Delaware Coastal Airport.
Phase 1 of the project, which includes a new extension of Park Avenue to connect to a roundabout at South Bedford Street and Arrow Safety Road, is under construction. Work is expected to be completed in spring 2024.
Phase 2, which will impact 65 parcels along Park Avenue, includes a new signal and improvements at the Route 9 intersection, a new right turn from Shingle Point Road onto Route 9, regraded swales along the roadway and stormwater management facilities. Work is expected to take place from 2024 to 2026.
