Paul Kares, a Lewes-based nonprofit that supports young performers and culinary artists, recently donated $1,000 to the Cape Henlopen High School Jazz Band during its Dec. 17 holiday concert at The Room at Cedar Grove.
This is the second grant Paul Kares has awarded to the high school band. Last year, the nonprofit awarded $3,000 to help cover jazz band travel expenses to attend the National Association for Music Education Eastern Conference.
Led by Director Chris Burkhart, the band performed at a sold-out holiday show at The Room for the second year in a row. All events held at The Room at Cedar Grove benefit the charity founded by Paul Cullen and Jim Rivette in 2020.
“It is such a pleasure to see all these exceptional students on stage, and we are proud to support the jazz band so that more people in the community can enjoy their music,” said Michael Whitehouse, executive director of Paul Kares. “Each one is so gifted; when they come together, it’s magic.”
In its support of children, teens and young adults interested in culinary professions, Paul Kares awarded grants last year to Delaware Technical Community College culinary students and has underwritten the cost of a student’s travel to Italy for a college culinary course. The nonprofit offers funds for financial assistance, instruments and kitchen tools, and scholarships for specialty camps, schools and programs.
Qualified individuals are Delmarva-area students interested in music, the culinary arts and related fields. Students, parents and grandparents, public and private school programs, and learning camps can apply.
