A perfect night for 89th annual Lewes Christmas Parade

It was a perfect night Dec. 4 for the 89th annual Lewes Christmas Parade sponsored by the Lewes Chamber of Commerce and the City of Lewes. This year’s parade was in honor of all pandemic frontline workers. Parade organizers also honored the memory of Larry Fifer, a longtime participant and chamber member who passed away earlier this year.

The results are as follows:

Most original entry – Johnson Orthodontics

Classic car (older than 1967) – 1. 1962 Austin-Healey 3000 MK II owned by Mike and Pat Tyler; 2. 1967 Triumph TR4 owned by Robert English; 3. 1957 MGA Roadster owned by David and Nancy Haines

Decorated vehicle (1968 or newer) – 1. 1971 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow owned by Steven Rose and Sandra McGee; 2. Truck pulling trailer with steamboat owned by Clem Legates; 3. RV owned by Jusst Sooup

Band – 1. Cape Henlopen High School

Fire company – 1. Milton Fire Department; 2. Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company; 3. Memorial Volunteer Fire Company

Commercial float – 1. Schell Brothers/Kids Cottage; 2. Cape May-Lewes Ferry; 3. Pedego Lewes Electric Bikes

Community float – 1. Lewes in Bloom; 2. Fort Miles Historical Association; 3. University of Delaware Hugh R. Sharp Marine Studies Campus

Youth organization float – 1. Cape Vikings Pop Warner; 2. Girl Scout Troop 499; 3. Cape Choir/Long & Foster

Marching group – 1. McAleer School of Irish Dance; 2. Beebe Healthcare; 3. Literacy Education Assistance Pups

Equestrian – 1. Pairadice Equestrian; 2. Kassidy Brown & Friends

Best sound (cash awards sponsored by John Ellsworth) 1. Meibaum Excavation, $40; 2. Cape Choir Singers/Long & Foster, $30; 3. Steamboat owned by Capt. Clem Legates, $20

Honorable mention awards – Anna's Daycare; Lewes Presbyterian Church youth group; Cape Henlopen High School Future Farmers of America; Beacon Middle School Honor Society/Jolly Trolley; Cub Scout Pack 1; Cape Henlopen High School JROTC drill team; Boy Scout Troop 1; Girl Scout Troop 1150; and Cape Henlopen High School LEO Club

Judges were Cape Henlopen School District Superintendent Robert Fulton, Beebe Healthcare President and CEO Dr. David Tam and Lewes Fire Department Deputy Chief Aidan Gause.

 

 

It’s official. Santa Claus arrives in Lewes on the Lewes Fire Department’s aerial truck.
Lewes Chamber of Commerce board of directors members ride in a vintage truck in memory of Larry Fifer, an active chamber member who passed away this year. Fifer drove the truck in the parade for many years.
The P.U.P.S. of Lewes float features a larger-than-life inflatable dog, of course.
Performances by the McAleer-Paulson School of Irish Dance are always a highlight of the Lewes parade. The judges agreed and awarded them a first-place trophy for best marching group.
Ahl and O’Conner Orthodonics’ Candy Land float is one of the most colorful in the Lewes parade.
It’s not often the Wet Bandits get any recognition. But Johnson Orthodonics went all out on their float to highlight the McAllisters of “Home Alone” fame. The judges selected the entry as the most original in the parade.

It’s a perfect replica of the Cape May-Lewes Ferry, which has been making the crossing between Lewes and Cape May, N.J., since 1964. The ferry earned a second-place award in the commercial float division.
Buddy the Elf rides a Pedego electric bike from the shop along Kings Highway in Lewes, a third-place winner in the commercial float category.

Don’t believe in unicorns? Well, if you were among the thousands watching the Lewes Christmas Parade you got to see one, thanks to Pairadice Equestrian in Milton, the top equestrian entry in the parade.
Lewes in Bloom has a large contingent of members marching behind a replica windmill surrounded by tulips, in honor of Lewes’s Dutch heritage. Their hard work paid off as they won for best community float.

Pat and Mike Tyler add the finishing Christmas decoration touches to their classic 1962 Austin Healy 3000. Tyler is founder of the popular British Motorcar Show in Lewes. The couple added to their awards with a first-place trophy in the classic car division.
What else do Cape Vikings Pop Warner players do when waiting for the start of a parade? They play some touch football.
