Regional Film Showcase set May 5-7

April 29, 2023

The Rehoboth Beach Film Society will present its 2023 Regional Film Showcase from Friday to Sunday, May 5 to 7, at the Cinema Art Theater near Lewes.

This year’s event will feature 15 films from seven states, an assortment that demonstrates the diversity and vibrancy of the independent film community in the Mid-Atlantic region. Two to three filmmakers will win the Fierberg Film Prize, which includes funding to enable them to continue to develop their craft.

To kick off the showcase, the society will host a welcome reception and a special screening of local filmmaker and Lewes resident Geoff Lerer’s feature “Spencer” at 7 p.m., May 5. Lerer has kindly offered to direct ticket sale proceeds to the Rehoboth Beach Film Society’s 25 for 25 spring fundraising campaign, with the goal to raise $25,000 for the main theater’s new digital cinema projector. Tickets are $5 per screening.

“The society continues its tradition of providing opportunities to emerging filmmakers who are honing their craft. Our hope is that these content creators will evolve to become the reason we continue to sit in a dark room with others — to be entertained,” said Helen Chamberlin, RBFS executive director.

Shorts screenings are set for 1 and 3 p.m., Saturday, May 6.

Selections and filmmakers are “Tying the Knot,” Ryan Zlatniski; “The Luminous Life of Tom Wilson,” Warren Allen; “Turkey on Rye,” Lucas Huie; “Valery,” Derek Patterson; “Hindsight,” Geoff Lerer; “Mr. Tindley,” Byran Russo; “A Small Appreciation,” Holden Conner; “The World is Lit by Lightning,” Greg Roderick; “The Josue on the Cuff,” Sarah Le; “Peer,” Marlon Wallace; “Hurricane,” Fiona O’Brien; and “Assawoman,” William Strang-Moya.

Feature film documentary “Il Messaggero” by Pete L. Ferraro will be screened at 2 p.m., May 7, telling the story of an Italian immigrant's mission to bring messages of hope and joy to America in 1966 as he settles his family in a suburb of Pittsburgh. In doing so, he unknowingly immortalizes a generation of Italians some 50 years later.
