Rehoboth Beach officials cut the ribbon on the city’s new parking meter building June 15.
Opened before Memorial Day weekend, the new building at 30 ½ Rehoboth Ave. houses the parking meter department, Rehoboth Beach Main Street and the city’s communications department.
Mayor Sam Cooper said this is the first time the parking department will have a building built to serve its needs.
“It was sorely needed,” he said.
The previous building was a former law office that was retrofitted, he said.
The parking building is the first piece of the city’s $18 million City Hall rebuild, which includes a new City Hall building for city administration and the police department. Cooper thanked the city voters for approving a referendum last year that allowed the city to borrow the money to move forward with the project.
Cooper said, “This is kind of the appetizer. The entree is coming about a year from now.”
Cutting the ribbon are (l-r) Commissioners Stan Mills and Toni Sharp, Cooper, City Manager Sharon Lynn and Commissioners Kathy McGuiness and Paul Kuhns.
