Rehoboth the place to Get Down in Town

Restaurants and shops pair up for a night of fun
March 28, 2012

Locals and visitors in Rehoboth Beach should bring their shopping shoes for the second annual Get Down in Town Friday, March 30.

Participating stores will be paired with restaurants; the stores will offer discounts and specials, while the restaurants offer food samples and beverages.

Azura Clothing owner and Get Down in Town creator Alyssa Titus said she plans to build on last year's success. "I think everyone was really pleased with the event – I mean stores and restaurants and patrons,” she said.

Get Down in Town will be a three-day event this year, kicking off at 6 p.m., Thursday, March 29, with “Wheels and Heels,” a fashion show at the Atlantic Sands Hotel. The show will feature clothing and accessories from Rehoboth stores such as Downtown Cowgirl, Quiet Storm and South Moon Under, modeled by the Southern Delaware Rollergirls. Admission is $2 with a cash bar.

Get Down in Town will be held Friday evening, while Saturday will be for the kids with a street craft fair from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at First Street Station. Local crafters will offer activities, joining kite-making with Rehoboth Toy and Kite and a spin-art machine.

Titus said this year’s Get Down in Town features more stores and more restaurants, including Stingray Sushi Bar and Latino Grill, Greene Turtle and Dogfish Head Brewpub. Titus envisioned Get Down in Town to be an annual spring event, but even she was surprised when it took off the way it did.

“I had no clue. Last year, the night of the event, when I had convinced all these people to participate I still had no clue. So when the patrons started showing up I was relieved and pleased, as were all of us,” Titus said.

Get Down in Town promises an even bigger event than last year. Besides more stores and restaurants, the event has also attracted more sponsors: in addition to original sponsors Azura and WSFS Bank, this year’s event is co-sponsored by Hobo’s Restaurant and the Cape Gazette.

Titus said down the road she hopes to make Get Down in Town a must-do weekend event, similar to the Seawitch Festival.

Patrons can purchase $10 wristbands at Azura, the Bellmoor, Carlton’s, Heidi Lowe Gallery, South Moon Under and WSFS Bank in Rehoboth in advance of the event. By buying a wristband, patrons are eligible for the chance to win $2,000 in gifts and prizes from participating stores. Wristbands can be purchased on the night of the event.

All proceeds from the wristbands will go to Southern Delaware Theraputic and Recreational Horseback Riding, Delaware Guidance Services and the Cape Henlopen High School Booster Clubs.

Among the pairings at this year’s event, Titus said, are Lupo Di Mare and Azura, C.L.A.D and Espuma, Stingray and Scandinavian Occasion, Victoria’s and Carlton’s, JAM Bistro and Rose Garden and Dogfish Head and White House Black Market.

In addition, Fins will be shucking oysters at Something Comfortable, while Henlopen City Oyster House will shuck oysters at Beach Graphics.

Titus said Get Down in Town allows patrons to discover businesses they may not have known about before.

“Maybe you’re going into Scandinavian Occasion because you love Stingray. Maybe you’re coming into Azura because you love Azura, but then you realize Lupo Di Mare has great food. So that’s kind of the point of the whole night, which has worked,” she said. “I think it’s going to be good.”
