Retired National Football League defensive end Mike Frederick has been named head coach of the Cape High football team after a school board vote April 28.

“We are looking forward to welcoming Coach Frederick to our Cape team,” said Superintendent Bob Fulton in a statement issued by the district moments after the vote. “He’s joining us with years of experience in the game of football and with a strong passion for helping to guide and mold our student-athletes into successful young adults.”

In the same statement, Frederick thanked Fulton, Principal Nikki Miller and the school board for having faith in him.

“I feel blessed beyond words to play a part in the development of our Cape students, both on and off the field,” Frederick said. “Go Vikings!”

Frederick played 71 games in the NFL after he was selected in the third round, 94th overall, of the 1995 NFL draft by the Cleveland Browns.

In 1996, he became a starter for the Baltimore Ravens, where he played for three years. In 1999, Frederick played his final pro year with the AFC Champion Tennessee Titans, including participating in Super Bowl XXXIV. Frederick had also signed briefly with the New York Jets and Philadelphia Eagles.

Following his NFL career, Frederick earned his master’s degree in business administration from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Frederick received his bachelor’s degree in commerce from the University of Virginia, where he was named football team captain his senior year and earned Academic All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors in 1993 and 1994. In 2000, Football Sporting News voted him University of Virginia first team All-Century.

Most recently, Frederick coached football in a variety of positions at Owen J. Roberts High School in Pottstown, Pa., where he was responsible for coordinating game plans with fellow coaches, and was previously head football coach at Neshaminy High School in Langhorne, Pa.

Frederick was inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame Bucks County Chapter and the Neshaminy High School Sports Hall of Fame. His uncle, Dave Frederick, is a Cape Gazette sports columnist and photographer who was inducted as a Cape High coaching Legend in 2016.
