The Delmarva Christian volleyball team hosted a tough Caesar Rodney squad Oct. 18, and when the final point was played, the Royals had dropped their seventh match of the season to the 10-2 Riders. The Royals moved to 5-7 with just three matches left.
Royals junior Elaina Millaway, playing each point like it was the postseason, led both teams at the net with 13 kills. She added 19 digs.
“I feel like when we got down a few points, we let it get into our heads,” said Millaway. “But that’s one thing we have to keep working on. We have to stay positive and know that we are down a few points, but we are good enough that we can get back into the set. We have three really tough matches coming up. We have to focus on getting the next ball, getting the next point and build on that.”
Senior Tobi Robinson had 14 digs from her libero position. Taylor Lowe garnered seven. Senior setter Maggie Kwiatkowski tallied 19 assists.
“Our energy was great in the first set,” said Kwiatkowski. “We still played good even though we lost the set. The last two sets, we lost the energy, and when we got down 6-0, it set us back.”
“We started out playing tough and with good energy,” said Royals coach Mike Zampini. “We had a strong first set. We got behind in the second set and that was our downfall. We have three more opportunities coming up. We have to work really hard, eliminate errors we made tonight and ... move on.”
The Royals placed third in the DIAA state tournament last season, going 16-3 and defeating Caravel 2-0 in the third-place match at the University of Delaware’s Bob Carpenter Center.
