It was soggy and a bit froggy, as locals say, for Cape’s Senior Night May 6 at Champions Stadium. The game was won by the Vikings 20-0 over Lake Forest. The game was called by mutual agreement with 10 minutes remaining as the rain intensified.
Cape has a home makeup game at 4 p.m., Monday, May 9, against a formidable team from Ocean City, N.J. Northeast winds of 25 mph are predicted for the Delaware Bay, so maybe a long bus ride instead of a rough boat ride – players will find out Monday.
Since losing to Broadneck 16-13 April 23, the Vikings have beaten Caesar Rodney, Smyrna, Sussex Tech and Lake Forest by a combined score of 79-5.
Cape goal scorers against Lake Forest were Molly Mendes with four goals; Kelly Bragg with three; Ella Rishko, Sierra Manifold, Lexi Nowakowski, Maren Buckaloo and Grace Wiggins each with two; and single goals from Lulu Rishko, Lina Frederick and Sarah Naar.
Cape assists were Mendes with four, Lulu Rishko with three, and Bragg, Narr and Manifold with one apiece.
Mikaylah Lindsey had one save for Cape. Cara Ovivarez had six saves for Lake Forest.
Cape is 12-1 in the regular season. The Vikings play Worcester Prep at home at 5 p.m., Tuesday, May 10.
The Cape JV team won 20-2 to improve to 7-2-1 on the season. Cape goals were scored by Olivia Burkentine and Anna Sullivan with four each, Skylar Steigerwalt and Lina Frederick with three apiece, and Landon Diehl, Marley Dunlop and Kayla Droge with two each.
Lake goals came from Peyton Parson and Alyssa Hoffman.
Note: Looking down the road toward the state tournament, Cape (12-1), Sussex Academy (12-1), Tatnall (11-1) and Tower Hill (11-1) are the only one-loss teams. Tatnall will host Tower Hill Wednesday, May 11, then Sussex Academy Friday, May 13.
