Seraph Brass to perform concert Feb. 5 at St. Peter’s in Lewes

February 1, 2023

Five musicians, members of a brass ensemble drawn from the top female brass players in the country, will perform in concert at 3 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 5, at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Lewes.

Seraph Brass, which has captivated audiences throughout the United States, Mexico and Europe with its dynamic sounds, will present a diverse repertoire that includes original transcriptions, newly commissioned works and well-known classics. The concert is one in a series presented by the St. Cecilia Music Guild, an outreach ministry of the music program at St. Peter’s, that this season celebrates women’s contributions to professional music.

The Seraph Brass ensemble was founded almost 10 years ago by classical trumpeter Mary Elizabeth Bowden to elevate and showcase the excellence of female brass players and to highlight musicians and composers from marginalized groups.

Ensemble members have performed with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, New York Philharmonic and San Francisco Symphony, and have toured around the world.

Four years ago, the ensemble released its debut studio album, “Asteria,” on Summit Records, winning a Silver Medal Global Music Award. The next year, Seraph Brass performed at the International Trumpet Guild Conference in Miami and appeared as the featured ensemble at the International Women’s Brass Conference.

Now in its ninth touring season playing primarily as a quintet or sextet, it has also performed as a larger ensemble of 10, some of whom backed the singer Adele on her 2016 North American tour.

The musicians are passionate about music education and hold teaching positions at the University of North Texas, Shenandoah Conservatory and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In each of its tours, the group works to provide educational outreach to local schools, and offer a variety of entrepreneurship and career development workshops. In Sussex County, the group appeared at Seaford High School in advance of the Lewes show.

“This program is one in our guild’s exciting music journey this season that celebrates the expertise of women in various forms of musical performance,” said Lois Powell, a choir member at St. Peter’s and founding member of The Chantels, an all-girl pop music group that enjoyed nationwide success in the 1950s.

The guild is most appreciative of the generosity of its donors, friends and visitors, which allows these exceptional concerts to be presented to the community at no cost. Freewill offerings are welcome.

St. Peter’s Episcopal Church is located at the corner of Second and Market streets in downtown Lewes.
