Less than two years after bringing SmashMouth Burgers to the Cape Region, owners Jamie and Nichole Parsons have opened a second food truck. The difference is this one is permanently located next to Big Chill Surf Cantina, north of Rehoboth Beach on Route 1.
The Parsonses opened the original SmashMouth food truck in August 2020. Their new truck opened in January.
If they were smart, said Jamie, they would have waited for nicer weather to open, but they didn’t want to miss out on the opportunity to take over the prominent location. SmashMouth had done food truck events on the property before and they knew it was a good site, they said.
“Absolutely,” Jamie said was their response when asked to take over the spot that had been the longtime home to Taco Reho before that truck’s owners opened a brick-and-mortar restaurant last year. “It’s a great spot. With the cantina, it’s a happening spot during the summertime.”
The new truck is still neon green and can’t be missed by anyone driving down the highway. Nichole said the menu for the new location features customer favorites, plus some new burgers made with premium proteins – elk, wagyu beef and turkey.
There are also Smash Shakes made with ice cream from Hopkins Farm Creamery, said Jamie.
The highway location features an indoor space in the Liquid storefront which the Parsons are calling the SmashMouth Lounge. It has a half-dozen tables with some window bar seating, plus board games for the kids, said Jamie.
In addition to the new truck, SmashMouth is also now serving breakfast.
Nichole said they had offered breakfast at different events, so coming up with a menu wasn’t too hard. Also, it’s a way to reach more customers, she said.
It’s hard to find a good, decent breakfast in the area, said Jamie, adding they’ve brought on local longtime chef David “DK” Krasnoff to run the breakfast portion.
Two weeks into breakfast service, things are going well; there’s already a group of regulars, said Jamie.
“We’re growing every day,” he said. “Every day is a little better than the day before.”
Jamie said online ordering is available for the new location and delivery will be coming soon.
The original SmashMouth truck is still on the road and just as busy as ever. The weekends are booked through to the fall, said Jamie.
