The Christmas music performed Dec. 10 at the brand-new Jane Clifton Ashford Center inside Camp Arrowhead was unlike most of the tunes that have been playing on radio since about mid-November. While there was some joyous singing by a couple who has performed internationally, the yuletide cheer was brought forth mostly by instruments. The Southern Delaware Orchestra, comprising individuals from a variety of backgrounds, gifted attendees with beautiful sound produced by strings ... and one sleigh bell.
The SODELO holiday concert wrapped up a successful 2022 for the nonprofit that saw the group form, rehearse and begin to fill venues across the Cape Region. While there was no river, there were plenty of woods to go through before reaching the holiday concert venue. Upon arrival, guests were directed to various spots among the trees, which Camp Arrowhead Director Walt Lafontaine jokingly said move when people are driving. A packed parking lot naturally led to a filled venue. While the first selections were not as well known by many, one couldn’t help but be drawn in by the enticing notes from SODELO and enchanting voices of Joseph and Ellen Turi.
Following a brief intermission, familiar songs such as “O Holy Night” and “Sleigh Ride” captivated the audience, leading to standing ovations. The concert concluded with a rousing rendition of “Carol of the Bells,” a selection that highlighted how powerful stringed instruments can sound. Following the concert, a reception was held, giving fans of the ensemble a chance to meet and mingle with those who brought the holiday jingle.
SODELO’s spring concert will be held at the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center at 3 p.m., Sunday, March 19. Bob Cafaro of the Philadelphia Orchestra will be the featured soloist and hold a pre-concert discussion at 2 p.m. More information is available at sodelomusic.org.
