The Special Olympics Delaware athletes and volunteers didn’t let a little moisture diminish the excitement of competition at the 50th annual Summer Games held June 11-12 at Caesar Rodney High School.
Track and field events were held at CR, while heavy rains canceled bocce ball and softball competitions at DE Turf and Schutte Park. Tennis competitions were held at Smyrna High School June 12.
“Heading into the Summer Games, we were looking forward to seeing our athletes back in competitive action for the first time in over a year,” said SODE Director of Media Relations Jon Buzby. “Although we were disappointed that the bocce and softball tournaments didn’t take place, it was so inspiring to see our track and field and tennis athletes be able to perform after months of preparation. Hats off to our coaches and the event volunteers for giving them that opportunity, and to DuPont and all of the other sponsors and hosts for stepping up and making the 50th Summer Games one that we will never forget.”
Special Olympics Delaware is looking at the feasibility of making up the softball and bocce ball competition at a later date.
Masks were worn by all who attended and social distancing was observed.
