Stanley Burton Kahane, medical doctor

Stanley Burton Kahane, M.D.  89, of Lewes, passed away Monday, July 4, 2016, at  Beebe Healthcare in Lewes.  He was born Wednesday, Dec. 1, 1926, in Bronx, N.Y., to Jacob and Agusta Kahane.

 Dr. Kahane proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, active duty in the Gulf War. In 1982 he achieved the rank of colonel. 

Dr. Kahane graduated from New York University and proceeded to University of Geneva, Switzerland and received his doctoral degree in medicine. He also attended Yale University where he earned a master’s degree in public health. He worked for the Bronx Lebanon Medical Center, The Beth Israel Medical Center and Nyack Hospital in New York. Later he moved to Baltimore, Md., where he was the deputy chief of staff at the Baltimore Veterans Affairs Office. He was then the chief of staff at the VA Central Office in Washington, D.C., as well as at the Lyons, N.J. and Tuskegee, Alabama medical centers. After retirement, Dr. Kahane worked as an inspector for the Joint Commission of Accredited Hospitals.

Dr. Kahane collected memorabilia from the British royal family and from the Great Ocean Liners, including the SS Norway, the RMS Queen Mary and the SS United States. He was also a car collector. Over the years he had Lincolns, Cadillacs and even ended up with two Prius in his later years. Dr. Kahane and his wife liked to go on cruises. They traveled to the Caribbean and Europe on the high seas. He was a family man who enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Dr. Kahane was preceded in death by his son, Pierre Kahane in 1987, as well as his two sisters: Leah Crespi and Florie Bauer. He is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Mary Ann Kahane; eight children: Gabrielle Hoffman (Bob), Leslie Kahane, Mary Ann Smeader (Jack), Barbara Richards (Jim), Patty Mitzak, William J Brown, III (Shelley) and James Brown; 15 grandchildren: Luke, Wyatt, Emma, Nicholas, Kelly, Chelsea, Matthew, Joey, Courtney, Andrew, Christopher, Cassandra, James, Faith and Thomas; his great-grandchildren, Levi and Skylar and three on the way; his sister, Marsha Foxx; his nephew, Marco Crespi; his niece, Sherry Teller (Richard); and many other friends and relatives who will miss him dearly.

 Memorial Services are to be announced at a later date in Woodbridge, N.J. at Beth Israel Cemetery.
