Steve Re resigns as Cape basketball coach

March 27, 2019

Cape boys’ basketball coach Steve Re has submitted a letter of resignation, Athletic Director Bob Cilento said.

Re, who recently completed his eighth season as head coach, met with his players prior to making the decision public. His record at Cape was 104-71. His teams reached the state tournament in seven of eight seasons.

The deepest Re took the Vikings into the postseason was the 2013-14 season, when Cape posted a 12-8 regular-season record before beating Indian River in the Henlopen Conference championship game. They won the first two state tournament games over Woodbridge and Howard, then fell to St. Georges Tech in the DIAA semifinals.

His best regular-season record came two seasons ago, when he rode the talented senior duo of Randy Rickards and Ian Robertson to a 16-4 record.

Re replaced Dwight Tingle as Cape’s head coach in 2011. He came from Mardela High School in Wicomico County, Md.

Re graduated from Frostburg University in 2000 and received his master’s degree in education from Salisbury University in 2002.

Re was an accomplished player at Salisbury University, serving as team captain in 2000 and scoring over 1,000 points in his college career.

Re served as assistant men’s coach at Salisbury from 2000 to 2003 before accepting the job at Mardela High School.
