Steven Eshelman wins 20th Cannonball 5K in 20:21

Lots of locals win age group honors

The 20th annual Cannonball 5K and Trenny Elliott Memorial Walk took place in Lewes Sept. 8, under ideal fall-like conditions.

Steven Eshelman, 31, was the overall winner in front of 103 runners with a time of 20:21. Luis Xavier Aguirre, 28, was second with a time of 20:24. 

Paul Hasson, 56, was male masters winner in 21:03. Lisa Levin was third overall and first female in a time of  20:48.

Sarah Richards, 39, was second overall female in a time of 21:15. Jamie Hicks won the female masters in 24:12.

Don Zalenski, 78, was the winner of the 5K walk in 40:26. 

J.R. Ward, with a 45-pound sack strapped to his back, completed the walk in 43:23. Alejandra Camarco, 51, was the first female in the walk in 43:34.

Notable local finishers - Richard Tikiob took a break from escorting back-of-the-packers and placed first in the 65-69 age group in 25:12, beating Mike Mitchell (25:37) and Charles Hautau (26:04), Dave Travis (26:07) and Dave Chameides (26:46).

Marjorie Adams was the winner female 65-69 division in 28:40. Woody Disharoon, 75, won the 75-79 age group in 29:54. 

Lesley Kroon, 45, a former Cape runner, won the 45-49 female age group in 27:50. 

Brittany Croll, 40, former athlete at Indian River and Franklin & Marshall, won the 40-44 female age group in 24:18. Younger brother Beau Croll won the 35-39 male age group in 24:20. 

Joey Kerrigan, 8, a student at Love Creek Elementary, won the 9-and-under age group in 36:55.

Rory Quirk, 80, won the 80-and-over male race in 49:14. 

The next Seashore Striders running event is the inaugural Harvest Hustle 5K run Saturday, Sept. 21, from the fishing pier at Cape Henlopen State Park. Race time is 9 a.m.
