Stonewall PAC slams Meyer on trans sports participation

March 25, 2025

The following letter was sent to Gov. Matt Meyer with a copy provided to the Cape Gazette for publication.

The board of Delaware Stonewall PAC endorsed and financially supported your campaign. You’ve said, “One of the greatest dangers to our youth today is that they too often are taught not to love their true selves.” You promised to promote and support a culture of inclusivity and fairness. However, your recent response to a hateful campaign regarding sports participation is in direct opposition to your previously held position. Your spokesperson explained, “Gov. Meyer doesn’t believe that trans girls should be playing in girls’ sports, but ultimately he defers those decisions to the leagues and localities.”

Your public response is entirely inconsistent with your promises to our community. Your position aligns with the hateful and harmful rhetoric of outspoken anti-LGBTQ+ bullies in our government.

We know our community, including our kids. Those who play sports do so for the fun of it, for thrill of competition, for health and well-being of their bodies and minds, and to learn how to work and play well with others. As an educator, you know that kids seek team sports because they crave a few hours where they can just be kids. Kids want to learn skills they need as adults: fairness, leadership, cooperation, resilience, perseverance, courage, confidence, sportsmanship, how to win and lose graciously. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if our elected representatives exhibited the same skills, character and maturity that our kids playing sports seek to develop?

We request a meeting to discuss the ramifications of this baseless campaign and the impact of your current position and public statements. We trust that together we can find a better way for all our kids.
