College signing day took on new meaning May 21, when 13 students in Sussex Central High School’s International Baccalaureate program committed to attend colleges offering them a total of $1.6 million in scholarships.
“That number does not include the college credits and additional scholarships they will receive when their final IB exams are scored this summer,” said teacher Joe Macaluso, who organized the academic signing day to recognize seniors. “We expect this number to grow over the summer when scores are released.”
Sussex Central High is in its sixth year as an IB World School. Students must apply and be accepted into the IB program, a rigorous, two-year interdisciplinary curriculum within the school that encourages critical and independent thinking and intercultural awareness.
Five students – Taylor Silkworth, Michael Greenlee, Kinsie Ruckle, Penn Smith and Victor Tung – will receive an IB diploma for taking all IB courses their junior and senior years. Other students, who took a mixture of IB, honors, Advanced Placement and Academic Challenge courses, will receive an IB certificate.
“Because of their dedication to their studies, we wanted to hold an extra celebration to recognize all they did during a tough senior year,” Macaluso said.
Students were accepted into 21 schools, including Villanova, Ohio State and Washington College.
