Jaryn Sample went 3-for-3 and scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to propel the Sussex Tech Ravens into the second round of the 2022 DIAA State Baseball Tournament.
Pitchers from both teams battled tough from the mound. Tech starter Zane Adams lasted 2.2 innings, allowing five hits, striking out four while giving up two runs. Jeremy Vest came in from the bullpen and threw 3.1 innings, giving up two hits and striking out two. Grant Allen came in for the seventh inning and shut down the Raiders’ bats, striking out two, giving up a walk and getting a ground ball out.
Seth Smart hurled a four-hit 5.2 innings for the Raiders, giving up just one earned run while striking out seven. Sophomore Will Hague came in from the bullpen. He took the loss when Sample scored in the seventh.
Sussex Tech senior Jonathan Stokley went yard in the first inning. Dakota Culley went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
The Raiders outhit the Ravens 7-5 in the game.
Sam Schroeder went 2-for-3 for the Raiders, knocking in both Woodbridge runs. Logan Moran went 2-for-3, while Austin Griffith, Lextyn Wescott and Christian Quinones each contributed a hit.
The Ravens move on to meet Concord in the second round.
