Teach a Person to Fish expands food rescue and meal program

February 5, 2023

Thanks to a capital grant from the Delaware Community Foundation, the Teach a Person to Fish Society was able to upgrade its kitchen and expand the Sustain Sussex food rescue and meals program.

The program rescues food donations from sources like farmers markets and grocery stores. During the growing season, garden-fresh produce is donated through a network of community and private gardens like Lewes Community Garden and the Unitarian Universalists of Southern Delaware garden.

Chef volunteers use the donations to craft nutritionally dense, individually and sustainably packaged, heat-and-eat meals for distribution to local food pantry outlets like the Community Resource Center in Rehoboth and the Milton Community Food Pantry.

The sustainability elements of this program encompass limiting food waste while also addressing community food insecurity and nutrition needs.

“The educational aspect of our meals mission is that, as much as practicable, we use local, readily available, inexpensive ingredients to craft a delicious, wholesome and nutritionally dense meal. Our goal is to show struggling families that our community will assist them to both reattain and maintain economic independence,” said Teresa Ripley, Teach a Person to Fish Society co-director.
