Two-time state champion softball coach John Marvel has announced his retirement after 25 years in public high school education and 13 years as head coach of the Sussex Technical High School softball team. Marvel led the Lady Ravens to the state softball crown in 2007 and 2012.
“Coach Marvel has done an excellent job in building Sussex Tech softball into a prominent program in the state,” said Sussex Tech Superintendent A.J. Lathbury. “We will miss him deeply. He will always be part of the Sussex Tech family. We wish him the best in his future endeavors.”
Marvel took over as Sussex Tech’s softball coach in 1999. During his tenure, the Lady Ravens won the state championship in 2007 and 2012. They were also the 2009 and 2011 Henlopen Conference champions, and have appeared in 10 consecutive state tournaments. Marvel was named state Coach of the Year in 2002.
Although he is leaving public education, Marvel plans to continue working with young people. He has accepted a position to teach Bible Studies at Delmarva Christian High School, a private high school in Georgetown. Also pastor of the Georgetown Community Bible Church, Marvel is excited about this new path in his life.
“Although I am sad to be leaving Sussex Tech,” he said, “I am happy that I will be able to teach the Bible to young people. I have to take advantage of this unique opportunity.”
