Sussex Tech pitcher Taylor Wroten went the distance, delivering a one-hit performance and striking out nine in the Ravens’ 4-0 shutout win over William Penn May 16 at Tech in the first round of the DIAA playoffs.
Wroten also helped herself at the plate, going 1-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Tech first baseman Corrin Faris went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Sierra Livingston went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Kayla Evans went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Kylie Kruger and Jakalya Sample each got a hit for the Ravens.
The Ravens fell to Wilmington Charter 7-3 in the second round Saturday, May 18.
The Ravens started off with a homer by leadoff batter Taylor Wroten and held the lead at 3-2 going into the top of the fifth inning. Wroten also went the distance in the circle, throwing seven innings allowing just two earned runs while striking out three Force batters.
The Force’s floodgates came open when they scored five runs in the fifth inning and outhit the Ravens 10-7 on the day. Ashley Steiner went 3-for-3 in the game while Mallory McCormick and Casey Meyer each went 2-for-4.
Sussex Tech’s Colleen Cosbey went 1-for-3 with a homer, scoring two.
Kayla Booros went 2-for-3. Kelsey Kormanik and Kylie Kruger each slammed a double.
“Everything doesn’t always go your way as you hope it does,” said Tech head coach John Marvel. ”I agree with Kobe Bryant. There is no such thing as failure, there’s disappointment. We’re disappointed, but you only fail when you stop. Some girls won’t get to play softball and continue, but their life goes on. So they learn from this. They learn from it, and when they get into their family life situations and things happen, sports helps them deal with it. There can be some good out of this.
“At the end of the day, this game doesn’t determine what they did here or the season they had. We had an outstanding season.”
The Ravens finish their season 17-3.
