Tech volleyball wins battle of Georgetown

October 16, 2019

The Ravens volleyball squad spiked the Sussex Academy Seahawks 3-1 in an intense 24-26, 25-17, 25-16, 25-22 matchup of the Georgetown squads. The Ravens move to 6-5, while the Seahawks are an even 6-6.

Tech senior outside hitter Sarah Perdue helped pace the Northern Division Ravens with six kills, six aces, 11 digs and a block.

“I was fired up,” said a jubilant Perdue. “It was our Senior Night, and I wanted a win. The atmosphere here was awesome. Everybody was hyped. Everybody just wanted to win so badly. I’m normally a quiet person, but they get me fired up.“

Senior setter Sydney West, who has only played the sport for two years, picked up 22 assists in the match.

“This was a very important win,” West said. “It’s my Senior Night. A team is not going to come out here and beat me at my home school on my night. It’s just not going to happen.”

Junior Nataleigh Hunter pounded 10 kills, assisted on 12 points, served six aces, bumped six digs and registered two blocks. Alexandra Johnson blocked four hits. Megan Sterling knocked down 10 kills. Karly Davis and Jessica Truitt had 22 ands 14 digs, respectively.

Senior Sierra Livingston was quick to praise her team on the victory.

“It was amazing,” she said. “We finally played together as one team and worked well as one unit. I am so proud of everyone.”

“Our team togetherness worked today,” said Tech head coach Carle Kling. “Our energy was much better than it usually is. Our crowd got into the game, our bench was into the game, everybody was playing excited. They were playing for each other. Our passes greatly improved from our previous games. Usually when we get down, we stay down, but we did a great job battling adversity today. I’m really proud of them.”

Seahawks junior captain Emily Moody had 34 assists and 16 digs in the match. Junior libero Grace Bucklin bumped 29 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Adrianne Bolandas put down 11 kills, bumped 11 digs and served three aces. Cassidy Schell bumped 16 digs and slammed eight kills. Sophomore Yuhki Saleff and senior Julia Swingle bumped 13 digs each. Tess Burke and Terri Kirschner had 11 and eight digs, respectively.

“Our team is young, and they are surely learning how to execute games like they kill it at practice,” said Sussex Academy coach Hailee Gooch. “We lost our most powerful hitter and one of our most consistent all-around players, Madi Burke, due to an injury that happened Friday. The girls have stepped up since tremendously and played louder than ever, played more aggressive than ever, hit harder than ever, and our serve-receive has never looked that good during a game. We could not be more happy with how they were finally able to bring the fight, hustle and teamwork to a game ... that we see every day at practice. We’re all very excited for the rest of the season and next year especially. Big things are coming from SA.”

“We played great tonight,” Bucklin said. “We are a young team, and we’re getting better and better.”

Tech was set to travel to Sussex Central Thursday, Oct. 17, while the Seahawks were to host Delmar.
