Turn Two Baseball Camp made its annual local stop at the Rehoboth Beach Little League complex June 20-23, when 40 future stars from 8 to 12 years old participated.
At the camp, instructors teach the fundamentals of the game and strive to introduce drills that are fun but provide a framework for helping young players develop consistency and improve their play.
“We focus on hitting mechanics, defensive play, pitching and base running throughout the week,” said camp director Chris Calciano. “There are skills drills and competitions the campers enjoy, and we try to finish each day with a scrimmage on each of the three fields we utilize.”
Calciano brings a grand slam of experience to the camp diamonds.
He spent 12 years as an assistant and head coach at the college level, serving as head coach at West Chester University 2001-04 and Georgia College & State University 2005-07. After that, he transitioned to scouting and has been in professional baseball for the past 15 years; he’s currently serving as a Major League Baseball scout for the Boston Red Sox. He had a three-year stint (2017-20) as a senior player acquisitions scout for the Cleveland Indians, now known as the Guardians.
“At the core of our camp is the experienced and caring staff that go above and beyond to help young players make strides in their ability and skills, and teach life lessons like handling failure or struggles that baseball can often bring,” Calciano said. “I can’t say enough good things about longtime coaches Steve Forestieri, Brent Wylie and Stu Madden, who have been a staple of Turn Two Baseball Camp for several years.”
Numerous camp alumni have gone on to play college baseball since the camp’s inception a decade ago. Many players on the Cape Henlopen 2018 and 2022 state championship teams have attended Turn Two Baseball Camp.
