UUSD to focus on leadership and service Jan. 28

January 25, 2024

Every year in January, Unitarian Universalists of Southern Delaware holds the Jean Charles service, with someone speaking on a topic related to leadership and service. This year’s program on Jean Charles, the Pioneers and Lay Leaders, is set for 10 a.m., Sunday, Jan. 28, in person at 30486 Lewes Georgetown Highway, Lewes, and livestreamed.

Several years ago, the UUSD board of trustees created the service to honor Charles’ exemplary leadership and service to the congregation, viewing her unwavering dedication to service as a model that deserved recognition.

Charles joined UUSD in 2002. As a natural leader with skills honed over 35 years as a middle school educator and assistant principal, it didn’t take long for her to jump into the life of UUSD and contribute her valuable talents and knowledge to help the small congregation grow. She quickly immersed herself into committee and leadership work, and has served as board president and chaired, co-chaired and served on multiple committees since then.

Charles was also one of the pioneers who helped purchase the church property to hold it until UUSD could buy it from them and construct the current building. She now serves as chair of the worship committee, is a member of the executive team and music committee, and fills the roles of worship associate, teen mentor and lay sermon presenter.

The Jean Charles Service Sunday is a reminder that everyone can find ways to serve their congregation and community, and carry the mission forward to strengthen UUSD’s loving community for generations to come. Information on UUSD current volunteer opportunities will be distributed to help members and friends find service opportunities by matching their interests with UUSD needs.
