Vikings girls’ basketball tops Central 67-20
The Cape girls’ basketball team collected its 15th straight victory Feb. 7, with a 67-20 win over the Golden Knights of Sussex Central. The Vikings move to 13-2 on the season, having outscored Henlopen Conference opponents 639-335.
The Vikings raced out to a 37-12 first-half lead. While freely subbing, Cape scored a 30-8 second half to garner the running-clock victory.
Sophomore Faith Re and freshman Amalia Fruchtman each scored 20 points. Mya Maull popped in 11 points, while grabbing eight rebounds, dishing off two assists and making five steals. Kayden Borge-Williams scored nine off the bench and added four rebounds.
Ja’Onna Lee, Grace Totten, Lulu Rishko, Jay’Lyn Slater, Hayden Hudson, Macy Steinwedel and Megan Smith teamed for seven points, 32 rebounds, 13 assists and 11 steals.
“It’s the end of the season and playoffs are coming,” said Fruchtman. “I’m going to miss my seniors, but we still have more work to do before they go.”
“I think we came out slow at the beginning tonight,” said Hudson. “We need to play hard, no matter our opponent, and we need to focus on our game and execute. We need to be 100% ready for the tournament because the teams will be a lot tougher.”
“We got to use a few different lineups tonight,” said Cape coach Pat Woods. “For us, we just need to execute.”
Cape boys victorious
The Cape Henlopen boys’ basketball team completed a season sweep of Sussex Central Feb. 7, with a come-from-behind 53-45 victory in Georgetown.
Jack Schell scored all of his team-high 17 points in the second half to propel the Vikings past the Golden Knights. The junior forward carried Cape through the third quarter, pouring in all of the team’s 13 points during the frame and helping to dig the Vikings out of a six-point hole. Down three after three periods, Cape opened the fourth with a 19-5 spurt to take control.
Senior point guard Drew Zimmerman delivered 14 points, five assists and a pair of three-pointers for the Vikings (11-5, 9-3 Henlopen North), who piled up 15 assists as a team and committed a season-low nine turnovers. Junior guard Tyrone Tolson added nine points, including a huge three-pointer during Cape’s late run, while senior forward Dylan Fannin contributed seven points off the bench.
Central led for much of the first half, but Zimmerman drained a running 35-foot bomb to knot the score at 21-21 at intermission. The Knights regained control early in the third only to surrender a series of inside buckets to Schell.
