Virginia S. Sigler, registered nurse

Virginia S. Sigler, 87, of Winchester, Va., died Monday, March 19, 2012, at Shenandoah Valley Westminster Canterbury, a retirement community, in Winchester.  She was the wife of the late John S. Sigler, who died March 23, 2003.

She was born Aug. 25, 1924, in Hunterstown, Pa., the daughter of the late George E. and Laura M. (Fleming) Slaybaugh. Virginia completed nurse’s training at Frederick Memorial Hospital in 1945 and was a registered nurse for 20 years at Prince George’s Memorial Hospital while residing in Beltsville, Md.

She was a longtime member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Greenbelt, Md., and The Lutheran Church of Our Savior in Rehoboth Beach, and spent the last five years as a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, Winchester. She was an active volunteer with Meals on Wheels in Lewes and a Delaware Master Gardener with 100 hours of service.

She was an active volunteer with other Delaware organizations, and a member of the DAR in Beltsville.

Virginia is survived by her daughters, Carol A. Joyce and husband Jon of Berryville, Va., Norma Jean Parks and husband Randle of Harbeson, Susan S. Phillips and husband Lee of Hamilton, Va.; a son, John D. Sigler  and wife Sharon of Boaz, Ala.; six grandchildren, Sandra Gallagher, James Parks, Benjamin T. Parks, Melissa Sibert, Evan Phillips and Elizabeth Phillips; and five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by brothers Bennard Slaybaugh of Finksburg, Md., Paul Slaybaugh of New Hampshire and Ray Slaybaugh of Littlestown, Pa.  Virginia was predeceased in death by daughter Alice M. Parker; and brothers William Slaybaugh, George Slaybaugh and Harold Slaybaugh.

There will be a 2 p.m. viewing, followed by a 3:30 p.m. funeral service Thursday, March 22, at Feiser Funeral Home, Inc, 302 Lincolnway West, New Oxford, Pa.

Burial will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 24, in Pines Church Cemetery, New Oxford. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, 322 Eighth Ave., 7th floor, New York, NY  10001.
