Five projects west of Route 1 are now underway. It's no wonder state transportation officials are warning motorists to seek alternative routes.

Major road work, a new hospital and hotel, and nearly 500 more housing units, including an approved apartment complex not yet under construction, are slated for the Route 24 corridor near the Plantation Road-Warrington Road intersection.

Phase 1 of a major Route 24 widening project started March 2. The $7 million project includes widening Route 24 to four lanes from Route 1 to Mulberry Knoll Road, with a center lane and turn lanes, bike lane and sidewalks. The contract allows for 537 calendar days, which would put completion sometime around mid-2021. Phase 2 of the project from Mulberry Knoll Road to Love Creek bridge will start at the completion of Phase 1.

Site work is underway for the Arbor-Lyn subdivision – 142 multifamily units on 35 acres – on the east side of Warrington Road.

One of the largest of Beebe Healthcare's projects in its more than 100-year history is underway on a 10-acre parcel adjacent to Arbor-Lyn. The 135,000-square-foot specialty surgical hospital could be completed by the end of 2022.

On the west side of Warrington Road across from Arbor-Lyn, site work is underway for Wellesley, a 131-single-family lot subdivision on 73 acres.

On Route 24 near the intersection, construction continues on Residence Inn by Marriott, an 82,000-square-foot, 104-room hotel on a 3.6-acre parcel across from the existing Beebe Healthcare campus.

Just east of the intersection, Sussex County Council recently approved an application for a 224-unit apartment complex on an 18-acre parcel.
