Event features pro and amateur skim contests, music, art fundraiser
August 1, 2024

The world’s best skimmers will join local athletes for the 42nd annual Zap Pro/Am World Championships of Skimboarding Aug. 9-11 on McKinley Street in Dewey Beach.

Championship Director Jason Wilson said he is excited to announce that the Philippines' Sonny Boy Aporbo is set to make his U.S. skimming debut, an event three years in the making.

“He’s the next generation of skimming,” Wilson said. “He’s landing stuff people didn’t even know was possible on a skimboard, so that’s paving the way for the sport.”

Brazilian Lucas Fink will return to Dewey to defend his world championship title, Wilson said, but he’ll have to face Dewey’s own Ethan Redefer.

“Ethan got second last year,” Wilson said. “I know he wants it.”

Local pro Sydney Pizza, who took third place last year, will be giving world champ Chabe White of Mexico a run for her money in the female division, Wilson said.

“It’s Sydney’s home turf,” Wilson said.

A young local skimmer to look for is Cooper Forcucci, Wilson said.

“He’s winning most semi-pro events and is close to turning pro,” Wilson said. “He’s on fire, one of the best-looking skimmers.”

Wilson expects record attendance at this year’s event, presented by Alley-Oop Skim and Skim USA. The top four competitors in all amateur divisions will win medals and prizes. Cash prizes will be awarded for the top six finishers in the men’s professional and top four finishers in the women’s professional divisions.

DJ Izzy Shapes and DJ Dub Sauce will entertain throughout the weekend for great beach vibes, Wilson said, and Schell Brothers’ Project Kudos Beach Chill Zone will provide an oasis.

The Art of Skim fundraiser is set for 6 to 10 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 10, at Ivy in Dewey, where attendees can win mini painted skimboards through a silent auction. The official afterparty for adults takes place from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m., Sunday, Aug. 11, at Nalu in Dewey.
