‘The Last Black Man in San Francisco’ opens July 5 at Cinema Art Theater

July 5, 2019

Starting Friday, July 5, the Rehoboth Beach Film Society’s Cinema Art Theater will present “The Last Black Man in San Francisco,” a remarkable drama directed and produced by Joe Talbot (his feature directorial debut) based on a story by Jimmie Fails and Talbot which, in turn, is partly based on Fails' own life.

Jimmie Fails dreams of reclaiming the Victorian home his grandfather built in the heart of San Francisco. Joined on his quest by his best friend Mont, Jimmie searches for belonging in a rapidly changing city that seems to have left them behind. As he struggles to reconnect with his family and reconstruct the community he longs for, his hopes blind him to the reality of his situation.

A wistful odyssey populated by skaters, squatters, street preachers, playwrights, and other locals on the margins, “The Last Black Man in San Francisco” is a poignant and sweeping story of hometowns and how they’re made—and kept alive - by the people who love them.

Screening times are 4 and 7 p.m., Friday, July 5; 7 p.m., Saturday, July 6; 3 p.m., Sunday, July 7; 2 p.m., Monday, July 8; 4 p.m., Wednesday, July 10; and 4 p.m., Thursday, July 11. Admission is $8 for members and $11 for future members. Customers are encouraged to purchase tickets online. If seats are available, tickets can be purchased at the theater starting 30 minutes prior to each screening.
